The Urinetown Glossary...
Campari - Bright red mild bitters-type alcoholic apéritif introduced in Italy in 1860 by Gaspare Campari.
"Crazy with the nitrates" - Nitrates in urine often indicate a urinary tract infection usually brought on by unsanitary lavatory conditions. If a person has a high level of nitrates in their urine, they undoubtedly experience one or more of the following symptoms (as well as others we'd rather not mention here).
- A painful burning sensation during urination
- Lower back, abdominal, or side pain
- Chills and fever
Suffice to say, if someone is going "crazy with the nitrates," they are suffering!
hasenpfeffer - A highly seasoned stew of marinated rabbit meat.
Malthus, Thomas Robert - 1766-1834. British economist who wrote An Essay on the Principle of Population in 1798, arguing that population increases faster than food supply, which inevitably leads to disastrous results of poverty and distress, unless the increase in population is checked by war, famine, disease, or "moral restraints."
slattern - An untidy, dirty woman. A vulgar promiscuous woman.
Stradivari (or Stradivarius) - A kind of violin made by the Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivari in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Those that still survive are considered the finest violins in existence.
truncheon A short stick carried by police; a billy club; a nightstick.

Urinetown The Musical ...

The Hult Center's Soreng Theater.
Music by Mark Hollmann
Lyrics by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann
Book by Greg Kotis
Directed by Joe Zingo
Produced by Jim Roberts
Cast and Crew: See List Below...
One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year draught, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN catapults the "comedic romp" into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
URINETOWN was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won four in 2002, including winner of the 2002 Tony® Triple Crown! Best Book, Best Music & Lyrics and Best Direction.
The show has just been released for production and this is the Oregon Premiere Production.
