Robert W. Cabell's musical "Pretty Faces" offers solid performances, smooth direction, an involving plotline, and an infectious score. It appears to be poised to become a theatrical staple on the regional circuit, à la "Nunsense."
Subtitled "The Large & Lovely Musical," Cabell's savvy take on beauty pageants offers plus-size contestants battling and bonding in their quest for the crown. Contestants from across the country have come to Paris, Ohio, to compete in the televised event, hosted by a feuding celebrity couple. Trying to keep control of both the show and its stars is the TV director, whose crush on one of the participants complicates matters even further.
Cabell and director-choreographer Joe Zingo successfully incorporate poignant moments into the comedic chaos. Cabell's music and lyrics have more original impact, ably implemented by musical director Jim Roberts.
The talented cast members bring energy and wit to their characters. The shining star of the night is Amanda Fackrell, who brings down the house with her talent presentation "Twirling for Jesus."
Director Zingo is also responsible for the set, costume, and lighting design, each of which receives winning marks from the judges, especially during the evening-gown competition.
