AVENUE Q has played all over the world in all kinds of theaters, but you haven't seen AVENUE Q until you see AVENUE Q at ACE!
It's always kind of exciting - for performers and audiences alike - when a theater takes a step outside a comfort zone and produces a show that breaks precedent in a daring way. It's even better when the show is lots of fun! That's the case with our new production of AVENUE Q! Although the show is not really all that subversive - it won the Tony when it opened on Broadway - and it's actually pretty conventional in its themes of young people starting out in the world and exploring the bonds of love and friendship - it does go some places that you would not expect colorful, cute Sesame Street-like puppets to go in terms of language, sexual frankness and adult situations; but this is musical comedy, and after all, we're talking about puppets!
AVENUE Q takes place around a certain low-rent area of New York where recent college grad Princeton has come to live, since he can't afford anything else with his B.A. in English. There he meets a motley assortment of fellow tenants: Kate Monster, a good hearted kindergarten assistant, Rod and Nicky, (roommates bearing a suspicious resemblance to Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie) Brian, a would be comedian and his fiancee, Christmas Eve, a would be therapist and Trekkie Monster, who is, shall we say, an internet enthusiast... The superintendent of their building is Gary Coleman - yes, the same Gary Coleman of Diff'rent Strokes fame! These are the folks who live and play on AVENUE Q! Naturally, Princeton and Kate are drawn together, despite their differences - she being a monster and all, but in classic musical comedy style, they do their best to work things out! Directed and designed by Joe Zingo, with specialty puppets designed by Joepetto's; AVENUE Q has transformed the ACE stage into a rundown, but cheery tenement. Aided by a delightful score and and an enormously clever script, AVENUE Q is a going to be magical, memorable and most of all, entertaining! Come see AVENUE Q at ACE!
